Tasmanian Climate Change Action Council

World experts will help shape Tasmania’s response to climate change through the new Tasmanian Climate Action Council.

The council has been established under the Climate Change (State Action) Act 2008 to provide high-level, independent advice on Tasmania’s response to climate change.

A major focus of the council will be the State’s greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets.

The council is chaired by respected academic Associate Professor Kate Crowley from the University of Tasmania’s School of Government.

Members of the council are high-calibre individuals from across science, business, government and the community. These members bring expertise from many areas of our society that are essential in tackling climate change, including climate science, agriculture, transport, urban design and planning, risk management, business strategy and behaviour change.

Under subsection 14(1) of the Climate Change (State Action) Act 2008 it is required that the Tasmanian Climate Action Council's Annual Reports be tabled for parliament. To dowload a copy of the TCAC Annual report for 2008-09 please click here.

Community Coalition of Interest to be established

The Community Coalition of Interest is a group that will allow Tasmanian community members to have their say on the State’s response to climate change.

In 2008, the Government sought community nominations to fill two key roles on the Tasmanian Climate Action Council and was overwhelmed by the community response. Over 80 nominations were received.

Not wanting to let such commitment and experience go to waste, the Tasmanian Climate Action Council has agreed that its two community representatives, Ben Kearney and Nel Smit, will develop a Community Coalition of Interest modelled on the approach adopted by the Tasmania Together program.

Further details on the coalition will be provided once that work is completed.
